Lasers are devices producing a powerful beam of light, which can have different applications and effects, depending on the type of laser used.  Laser treatments are now widespread in modern medicine.  They are not only used for skin treatments, but also for eye surgery, general surgery and various other medical applications.

Tattoos are made up of particles of ink (pigment) contained in layers throughout the skin.  The body sees each particle of ink as a ‘foreign body’ and eventually encapsulates it in a band of collagen, as it is too large to be removed by the normal body defence mechanisms.  Tattoo removal works by breaking down the collagen wall and fragmenting the ink particles.  The normal body defences are then able to remove the smallest particles, and gradually disperse the pigment over a number of treatments.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The number of treatments required will depend on several factors, including;

• The amount of pigment present
• The colours of the tattoo pigments
• The density, type and age of the tattoo
• The skins reaction to the laser light
• The presence of other skin conditions
• The ink used (professional tattoo, Indian, or pen ink)

Generally, you would expect a gradual fading of the tattoo after each treatment.  It is not possible to assess the exact depth or density of the tattoo prior to treatment.  Therefore, any estimate of treatments required will always be subject to uncertainty.  The treatment of colours other than black/blue can be difficult, and this is especially true for green ink.  Certain new types of fluorescent tattoos do not respond to laser treatment, and will be left behind after the rest of the tattoo is removed.  If a tattoo is particularly dense or brightly coloured, it is likely that some pigment will remain after the course of treatment is complete.

Tattoo removal is a process and it is essential that clients advise the laser operator of all relevant information regarding their tattoo, plus any medical conditions they may suffer from, including any changes to these over the course of treatment.  The minimum interval between treatments is 8 weeks.  This is to allow sufficient time for the skin to heal and the treatment to be most effective.

In the first instance, phone Donna on 07840 804207 for an initial chat, as all of your questions can be answered fully and quickly.  If you are a suitable candidate for treatment, you will be asked to come along for an initial consultation.  Paperwork relating to any health problems and medication will be completed and signed.  The treatment, aftercare, skin care, and ‘do’s and don’ts will be explained.  Any questions will be discussed, and answered fully to your satisfaction, to enable you to make an informed decision about treatment.  If, after this, you are happy to continue with treatment, a patch test will be performed.

What is a Patch Test?

The skin on the area to be treated, is cleaned with a degreasing cleanser.  You will be asked to wear a pair of Laser goggles, as the Laser light is quite bright.  The light will be flashed on a few small areas of the tattoo, to obtain frequency information for your treatment.  When you return for treatment, this is the setting we will be starting on for your first treatment.  Treatment can commence any time after 48 hours have elapsed – this is an insurance requirement.  No treatment will be carried out without a prior patch test being performed.

What Happens During a Treatment?

The area to be treated is cleaned with a degreasing cleanser.  For larger areas, you will be asked to shower, before attending the clinic.

During treatment, you will have access to a cooler unit, to blow cold air onto the area – this makes the treatment more comfortable.  You will be asked to wear a pair of Laser goggles, as the Laser light is quite bright.  The light will be flashed on the areas to be treated.  Aloe vera gel is then applied to the area, and you can be on your way.  You will be given a pot of aloe vera gel to take home (free of charge).  This will replace your usual skin cream on the area for the next 2 days.

How Often Do I Need Treatment?

Treatment can be carried out 8 – 12 weekly.  Tattoos 8 years or newer will fade during this time.  Tattoos 20 years old and over, will take up to 12 weeks to fade.  Treating sooner will not remove the tattoo quicker, it will just mean that you are paying to retreat the same ink that has yet to fade.

Prices

Consultations are FREE, and a patch test is £50.  Patch tests carried out on additional tattoos during your consultation, will be charged at only £15 each.  Prices start at £100 for a small tattoo, going up to £400 per session for full backs.  Very small tattoos are £50 per session, after the initial treatment.
